Narrowboat Ebenezer II

Engine

iEbenezer's engine is a Lister HW3M from 1967, with serial number of 2198HWM317X.

Ebenezer's engine build plate

The date of 1967 is derived from the code '17', which follows the 'HWM' and '3'.  Notice that the plate shows the engine type "HWM" followed by the number of cylinders rather than the way it is know in, for example, the manuals: "HW3M".  The number 2198 means that it was the 2198th HW3M built in 1967.

The "HW3M" type designation breaks down as follows:

'H' says it's an H-series engine
'W' means it's water-cooled
'3' means it has three cylinders
'M' denotes that it is the marine propultion variant.

Built at Lister's Dursley factory, it is believed that this engine spent some time in a trawler.

With a capcity of 2779cc, it develops 36hp at 2000 rpm and weighs in at 1320lb (approximately 600kg). We typically cruise at about 800rpm, giving us average fuel consumption of around 1 litre per hour, about 4½ hours to the gallon.
